How to care for your handmade pottery

About the Glaze Palette

At Whistle & Page, glazes are chosen as thoughtfully as the clay itself. The palette is inspired by the natural rhythms of the landscape outside the studio windows — moonlight, blossoms, fresh leaves, wide blue skies, and warm sunshine stretching across the countryside. Each glaze family carries a simple Japanese name that reflects these elements: Tsuki (whites), Sakura (pinks), Midori (greens), Aozora (blues), and Ohisama (yellows). Together they form a gentle landscape on clay, where colours move, pool, and soften in the kiln, ensuring every piece remains beautifully one of a kind.

Handcrafted & One of a Kind

Not all mugs are created equal. Some hold coffee. Smug Mugs hold confidence. Made slowly and soulfully in the Whistle & Page studio in Murrumbateman, each Smug Mug is wheel-thrown, hand-trimmed, and finished in vibrant, unpredictable glazes. Think cosmic navy, eucalyptus green, peony pink, deep red, and earthy neutrals. No dipping, no rushing—just rich colour and raw clay charm. At the front? A signature raw strip of clay featuring your hand-stamped phrase—cheeky, confident, and full of character. You pick the vibe, the kiln brings the drama. Handled or handleless? Totally your call. One’s classic. The other’s a warm hug. Both are here for your daily dose of caffeine and sass.

A Slow & Intentional Process

Every mug is made to order, and here’s what that looks like:

  • Day 1–2: Wheel-thrown and shaped with care. Then it rests a bit—just like us.

  • Days 3–9: Your phrase is hand-stamped into the raw clay plaque. If chosen, the handle is added now too. Then it chills in a damp box to dry slowly and evenly.

  • Days 10–12: Bisque firing begins—this is where the clay becomes strong enough to handle life’s little spills.

  • Days 13–15: I brush on at least three layers of glaze—no dips, all hand-painted love. Then it’s back into the kiln.

  • Days 16–18: Glaze firing works its magic. Once cooled, each mug is sanded smooth, given a soapy bath, and prepped for packing.
