Handcrafted & One of a Kind
Each Hug Mug is wheel-thrown, carefully trimmed to give it a perfect shape, and refined by hand to create a comfortable, tactile experience. Finished in my signature Petrichor glaze, no two mugs are ever the same — each carries unique movement and depth. These mugs aren’t made in a factory by robots—they’re made with real hands, real love, and just the right amount of cheekiness. The process starts with wheel-throwing (aka getting my hands muddy and creating the form), followed by the addition of a raw clay plaque where your custom phrase gets hand-carved by yours truly (sometimes with a cheeky stamp or two). And let’s not forget about the handles—if you want one! If not, no problem. Just grab the handleless version and embrace the hug.
Each mug is as individual as you are. No two are alike, and they absolutely won’t judge you for needing that extra shot of espresso.
A Slow & Intentional Process
These mugs aren’t rushed. Great things take time, and these mugs are no exception. Here’s a look at the deliberate steps I take to create each one:
Day 1–2: I start by wheel-throwing the mug, shaping it with care. After that, it dries for a day or two, just enough time for the clay to settle and prepare for trimming.
Days 3–9: Time to add the hand-carved plaque and handle (if you’ve chosen one). The mug then spends about a week in a damp box, slowly drying and letting the clay naturally homogenise—no cracks, no rush, just steady progress.
Days 10–12: The bisque firing happens next. The mug gets a 3-day heat treatment to transform it from soft clay to a durable, fired base. It’s like a slow, rejuvenating process that sets the stage for what’s next.
Days 13–15: Now for the fun part! I hand-paint each mug with at least three layers of my signature glazes. No dipping here—each layer is brushed on by hand to create depth and variation in texture and colour. The result? Rich, beautiful glazes that are full of personality and variation, embracing the beauty of imperfection.
Days 16–18: The mugs are fired again in the glaze kiln for 3 days, locking in all those gorgeous colours. Then, I gently sand the bottom of the mug to give it a smooth, tactile feel, followed by a warm, soapy bath to finish things off.
Final Touch: Once it’s all done, your Smug Mug is carefully packed and shipped, ready to be filled with whatever makes your morning—and your mood—shine.
