How to care for your handmade pottery

About the Glaze Palette

At Whistle & Page, glazes are chosen as thoughtfully as the clay itself. The palette is inspired by the natural rhythms of the landscape outside the studio windows — moonlight, blossoms, fresh leaves, wide blue skies, and warm sunshine stretching across the countryside. Each glaze family carries a simple Japanese name that reflects these elements: Tsuki (whites), Sakura (pinks), Midori (greens), Aozora (blues), and Ohisama (yellows). Together they form a gentle landscape on clay, where colours move, pool, and soften in the kiln, ensuring every piece remains beautifully one of a kind.

Handcrafted & One of a Kind

Each Mugzilla is handmade in my Murrumbateman studio, wheel-thrown, shaped, trimmed, glazed, and finished by hand. With a generous 350–400ml capacity and a comfy handle, it’s perfect for long coffees, multiple rounds of tea, or hot chocolate you’re definitely not sharing.

Choose your shape: Round-bellied for a soft, hug-like curve, or Curvy for a sleek, elegant silhouette. No two Mugzillas are ever the same — slight quirks, glaze drips, and subtle asymmetries are part of the charm.

A Slow & Intentional Process

Because even Mugzillas deserve the full spa treatment.

  • Days 1–2: Thrown on the wheel. Each Mugzilla is shaped with care, then left to rest, like me after hauling in groceries.

  • Days 3–6: Trimming and handle attachment. Handles are pulled and attached by hand, then mugs rest in a damp box to dry slowly — no cracking under pressure.

  • Days 7–10: Bisque firing. The kiln transforms soft clay into sturdy ceramic, ready to hold your drinks (and your thoughts).

  • Days 11–13: Glazing. Each mug is brushed by hand with multiple layers of glaze, building colour and personality.

  • Days 14–16: Glaze firing and finishing. Colours settle, bottoms are sanded smooth, and mugs get a warm soapy bath — because they, and you, deserve it.
