How to care for your handmade pottery

About the Glaze Palette

At Whistle & Page, glazes are chosen as thoughtfully as the clay itself. The palette is inspired by the natural rhythms of the landscape outside the studio windows — moonlight, blossoms, fresh leaves, wide blue skies, and warm sunshine stretching across the countryside. Each glaze family carries a simple Japanese name that reflects these elements: Tsuki (whites), Sakura (pinks), Midori (greens), Aozora (blues), and Ohisama (yellows). Together they form a gentle landscape on clay, where colours move, pool, and soften in the kiln, ensuring every piece remains beautifully one of a kind.

Handcrafted & One of a Kind

Each Snack Pact Dish is handmade in my Murrumbateman studio with intention, clay dust, and a dash of chaos (usually a dog underfoot or a small human asking about cherry pits). Handbuilt and glazed by hand in satin white—or a glaze of your choice—with a natural clay edge for earthy charm.

No two are the same: slight variations in shape, glaze, and clay give each dish a unique personality. Perfect for olives & pits, pistachios & shells, chips & guacamole, or any snacks that need their own space.

A Slow & Intentional Process

Because even small dishes deserve the full spa treatment.

  • Day 1–2: The clay is hand-rolled and shaped, the divider carefully placed, edges smoothed. Like me before coffee, it needs a little time to gather itself.

  • Days 3–16: The dish dries slowly for two whole weeks, giving the clay time to strengthen and relax. During this period, I refine edges and the exposed clay, shaping every corner by hand.

  • Days 17–18: Bisque firing transforms the dish from soft, pliable clay into a durable ceramic ready to hold your snacks (and your sanity).

  • Days 19–20: Glazing begins. Satin-white or a glaze of your choice is carefully brushed on in layers—no dipping, no shortcuts. The clay peeks through here and there for character and charm.

  • Days 21–22: Glaze firing brings the finish to life. Colours melt, settle, and reveal subtle drips, textures, and depth. Finally, the dish is sanded smooth and given a gentle soapy bath, ready for action.
