The Starry Midnight Grater

$38.00

A quiet ritual for the heart of your kitchen

There’s a certain magic in preparing food by hand — the scent of fresh ginger releasing its warmth, garlic grated finely into a dish destined to comfort. This handcrafted piece invites you into that moment: slow, intentional, and full of care.

The grater surface is left raw, sharp beneath your fingertips, making it a joy to use. Carved herb-stripper holes wait patiently for sprigs of rosemary and thyme. Turn it over, and you’ll find a deep midnight glaze, scattered with speckles like stars on a clear country night — a reminder that even small, everyday moments can feel a little celestial.

A piece to leave on the kitchen bench, ready for use and admiration, season after season.

Handcrafted & One of a Kind

Each Starry Midnight Grater begins as a smooth slab of rich red clay, shaped and refined by hand. I carefully form the rim to frame delicately carved herb-stripper holes. The grater surface is etched using sgraffito, creating sharp, raised ridges for effortless garlic and ginger grating. The underside is hand-glazed in deep midnight blue, with soft white speckles layered over four coats to evoke a starry night sky. Fired to over 1200°C, each piece is built for beauty, strength, and lasting use in your kitchen.

A Slow & Intentional Process

Each piece goes through a thoughtful process of creation:

  • Day 1: Rolling and shaping a smooth slab of clay, refining edges, and carving herb-stripper holes by hand.

  • Day 2: Etching the grater surface with sgraffito, creating sharp ridges for perfect grating.

  • Day 3–4: Layering four coats of midnight glaze by hand, allowing each layer to settle and deepen.

  • Day 5–7: Firing to over 1200°C, vitrifying the clay and setting the glaze for lifelong durability.

  • Day 8: Sanding and finishing off with a warm, soapy bath — the final touch before finding its place in your kitchen.
